The Expressive beta is open: turn your raw DNA into a research-backed health report
A few years ago I uploaded my DNA to 23andMe expecting real answers about my health. What I got back was a handful of curated reports and, buried in the account settings, a raw data file with hundreds of thousands of genetic variants and no idea what any of them meant.
So I did the thing almost nobody has time to do. I spent hundreds of hours reading the actual research, one variant at a time, trying to work out what my genetics actually said about me. It was slow, technical, and mostly manual. The frustrating part was how repeatable the work was: a person, a variant, a set of studies, an honest summary. A computer should be doing this.
There was no platform that would just do that work. Evidence-based, kept current as new research published, and without quietly monetizing the most sensitive data you will ever own. So I built one.
What Expressive does
Expressive turns your raw DNA file into a living health report, scored by the strength of the scientific evidence behind each finding. You upload the same 23andMe or AncestryDNA file that has been sitting in your downloads folder, and we match every variant in it against current research.
Every claim on your report is anchored to a real source: a PubMed study, a GWAS Catalog entry, a PharmGKB annotation. When the evidence is strong, we say so. When it is preliminary or mixed, we say that too, and we show you the magnitude so you can tell the difference between a variant that genuinely matters and one that is statistically real but practically tiny. We do not prescribe. We describe what the research says and let you decide.
It updates itself
Genetics is not static, and neither is the research. New studies land on the variants you carry all the time. Most consumer DNA reports are frozen at the moment they were generated. Expressive is not. When new research publishes on one of your variants, your report updates automatically, and we can tell you what changed.
Your genome stays yours
Your raw file is encrypted the moment it arrives, parsed, and then discarded. Only the extracted variants are kept, in a database isolated from your account. We never sell it, never share it, and you can delete everything at any time. The whole reason this platform exists is that the old deal, hand over your genome and hope for the best, was broken. We are not rebuilding it.
The beta is open, starting today
Until now, uploads were gated behind a waitlist. As of today that gate is open. If you have a 23andMe, AncestryDNA, MyHeritage, or plain VCF file collecting dust, you can upload it and get your report right now, free during the beta.
Here is how to start:
- Create your account. It takes about a minute.
- Upload your raw DNA file. Not sure where to find it? Most services keep it under Settings, Privacy, or Browse Raw Data.
- Read your report. Explore what your genetics may say about your health, with every insight tied back to the research behind it.
