Novel Genetic Loci Identified for the Pathophysiology of Childhood Obesity in the Hispanic Population - Unknown journal (n.d.) · Unknown authors · PubMed 23251661
ABSTRACT: Genetic variants responsible for susceptibility to obesity and its comorbidities among Hispanic children have not been identified. The VIVA LA FAMILIA Study was designed to genetically map childhood obesity and associated biological processes in the Hispanic population. A genome-wide association study (GWAS) entailed genotyping 1.1 million single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) using the Illumina Infinium technology in 815 children. Measured genotype analysis was performed between genetic markers and obesity-related traits i.e., anthropometry, body composition, growth, metabolites, hormones, inflammation, diet, energy expenditure, substrate utilization and physical activity. Identified genome-wide significant loci: 1) corroborated genes implicated in other studies (MTNR1B, ZNF259

Lifestyle context
Concrete actions anchored to the cited research. We do not prescribe, we describe.
Diet
-
Balanced diet for weight management Low
Dietary optimization supports metabolic health in context of genetic predisposition to weight gain
Work with healthcare provider or registered dietitian to optimize energy balance and nutrient density
Discuss with your doctor
-
Genetic predisposition to weight gain and prevention strategies Low
GWAS evidence indicates increased genetic risk for obesity-related traits; individualized counseling optimizes prevention approach
Exercise
-
Regular aerobic and resistance activity Low
Physical activity supports metabolic health and weight management in context of genetic predisposition to obesity-related traits
Target at least 150 minutes moderate-intensity aerobic activity per week, plus 2+ days resistance training
Screening
-
Body weight and BMI Low
Genetic variants in CELF2/LINC00710 are associated with obesity-related traits; periodic monitoring enables early intervention if needed
Check weight and BMI at least annually; discuss with healthcare provider if trending upward
